A short, short history of the grown up life of the artist known as Lyn B.
Thats me - Lyn Broughton !
I came to New Zealand from Perth, Australia, in 1972 and after a period of apple-picking and hitch-hiking round with my lovely sister ... I met this great guy in a Youth Hostel in Dunedin. We lived in the South Island, in picturesque but misty Rai Valley for 10 years, but in 1980 we moved to Nelson and I started working as a glass artist, making windows and free hanging panels for private individuals and public buildings, and for solo exhibitions in Wellington and Christchurch . After leaving the glass business behind in 1995, we took a break of a few years to windsurf our way round the world....
Then in about 2005, after constant encouragement (I think I called it nagging!) from my husband, I started painting using acrylic as a medium. I was always fascinated by the amazing colours of the glass and love using colour in my paintings as well. I find the influence of my earlier glass designs have been strong in my current paintings and will probably always show through, but I am also enjoying the freedom to do things with paint and paintbrush that would not have been possible in glass.
Many of my paintings explore the moods of our amazing Boulder Bank (pictured above) and the ever changing views of mountains and sea that I witness from my window every day. I am strongly influenced by the seascapes and landscapes around me, and by all things in the natural world, down to the smallest insects! But I often like to include an element of fantasy, or use my imagination to play around with reality.
Early in 2019 I lost my dear husband to cancer ... and thus starts a new era for me. Moving from our beautiful (but now rapidly becoming wild) 5 acre property, to a charming smaller place in town, I hope to have new energy to devote to my artwork.
